Ingredients for BBQ Oven Baked Chicken Drumsticks

ingredients to make recipe

Let’s start by gathering the ingredients needed for our oven-baked chicken drumsticks. In Chef Speak, this is called the “Mise en Place,” which translates to “Everything in its Place.”

Not only does setting your ingredients up ahead of time speed up the cooking process, it also helps ensure you have everything you need to make the dish.

*This recipe will work with chicken breasts, thighs, and wings.

Simple Ingredients

This easy recipe uses easy-to-find spices, your favorite barbecue sauce, and chicken drumsticks. If you’ve got a favorite homemade BBQ sauce recipe, use that. I use Sweet Baby Rays when I don’t have time to make my own BBQ sauce.

  • chicken drumsticks (chicken legs)
  • barbecue sauce
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • chili powder
  • smoked paprika (or sweet paprika)
  • black pepper
  • salt

How to make BBQ Oven Baked Chicken Drumsticks

Follow along with my simple step-by-step instructions to learn how to make BBQ oven baked chicken drumsticks in your home kitchen.

  • Rinse and pat dry the chicken with paper towels.
  • Place the drumsticks into a large bowl.
  • In a small bowl, add the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix together to blend the seasonings.
  • Using your hands (please make sure they’re clean), rub the seasoning generously all over the chicken.
  • If you have time, place the seasoned drumsticks in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes to give the seasonings time to work their magic.

Preheat your oven to 400°F

  • Line your baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire baking rack on top of the baking sheet. Place the chicken drumsticks on the wire rack, leaving a little room between each drumstick (let the chicken sit out for 10-15 minutes to come to room temperature).
  • Place the baking sheet on the center rack of your preheated oven for 35 minutes.
  • Reduce the oven heat to 350 degrees F. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and brush the chicken legs with barbecue sauce. Return the drumsticks to the oven and bake for an additional 7-10 minutes.
  • Remove the chicken drumsticks from the oven, turn the chicken legs over, and brush again with BBQ sauce. Return to the oven and continue baking for another 7-10 minutes. *Add as many layers of BBQ sauce as you like.

*You don’t need a meat thermometer for this recipe, but if you want to check, the minimum internal temperature is 165 degrees F.

Serve our oven-baked BBQ Chicken Drumsticks with your favorite sides or classic BBQ sides, such as cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, and corn on the cob.

Recipe FAQ’s

What temperature should I bake the chicken drumsticks?

I like to start with high heat at 400 degrees for the initial baking time of 35 minutes. I then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees when I apply the barbecue sauce and continue to bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.

How do you get barbecue sauce to stick to the chicken?

Bake the chicken for 35 minutes, brush it with barbecue sauce, and return it to the oven to finish cooking.

Can I make the chicken in an air fryer?

These barbecued chicken legs will come out exceptionally well in an air fryer.
Heat your air fryer to 380 degrees. The only change in the recipe is lightly oiling the legs before rubbing in the seasonings. Cook the legs for 10 minutes, then flip them over and continue cooking for another 8-10 minutes. Apply the barbecue sauce and continue cooking for 3-5 minutes or until an internal temperature of 165 degrees is reached.

Hi Chef Dennis, this looks like a good recipe to try although I do prefer chicken thighs over drumsticks. Could I use skin on bone in chicken thighs and if so, would the cooking time be any different?

You sure can, depending on how big they are, it should be about the same time, except do the first cook to 45 minutes, then apply the bbq sauce and go another 10 minutes. If they’re really big they could take an extra 7-10 minutes.

It’s a keeper!!! The only recipe you’ll ever need for barbecued chicken – I’ve made it 10 times over since I found it a month ago and wouldn’t change a thing. FYI – your Tiramisu recipe has also become a favourite of mine and make it regularly. Love your tips as well – you have become my “go to” chef!!

Your photos look like drumettes (from the wings). Are they full drumsticks? You have 10 in 2 pounds, and I got 16 in 4.4 pounds, so they’ve very small. The size will affect the cooking time. The smallest drumsticks in my batch were just cooked– I would have liked them more done, so I’m concerned the larger ones aren’t cooked enough. Also, I didn’t make the full amount of seasoning and still ended up with far more than you show on your pieces in the photos. They were a little overly salty for my taste. Overall, though, this was an easy way to prepare the drumsticks without too much fuss.

I always buy small farm chicken and the legs are smaller than grocery store chicken legs. If they are bigger, they will require more time to cook.

Kosher salt or any other coarse salt will work. If you want to use table salt, cut the amount down by half.

This is the absolute best BBQ oven-baked chicken I’ve ever had in my life, much less made myself. And I love to cook.

This BBQ rivals any restaurant BBQ chicken. The only thing that could possibly top it is if it were charcoal-grilled outside.

My husband tears them up every time.

Delicious! I’m not usually a fan of BBQ chicken, but had a hankering for it and didn’t want to fire up the grill. This was perfect- easy, pretty hands-off, and DELICIOUS!
