Ingredients
Let’s start by gathering the ingredients we need to make my creamy chipotle sauce recipe. In Chef Speak, this is called the Mise en Place, which translates into Everything in its Place.
Not only does setting your ingredients up ahead of time speed the cooking process, but it also helps ensure you have everything you need to make the dish.
Can I change up the ingredients?
I used sour cream to make this recipe, but you can substitute Mexican crema or Greek yogurt.
You can also make a simple chipotle mayo by adding pureed chipotle peppers and seasonings to mayonnaise. Or use all Mexican crema to make a Chipotle crema. You have lots of options to make a sauce to your taste preferences.
Can I make the sauce less spicy?
Yes, you can. To make it less spicy, reduce the amount of chipotle peppers or increase the amount of mayonnaise, sour cream, or a combination of both.
You can also add a little honey or brown sugar to the sauce to help balance the flavors and reduce the heat.
You can also make my homemade sauce spicier by adding additional peppers or your favorite hot sauce.

Adobo is a tomato-based sauce that includes vinegar and is usually what chipotle peppers are canned in.
While it’s similar, it’s not as spicy and has a slightly different flavor. You can make a simple version by using adobo as a base and adding pureed chipotle peppers or sauce to it. This will also result in a less spicy version of the sauce.
