Ingredients for Hot Cocoa Dip

Ingredients to make the recipe.

Gather the ingredients to prepare our Hot Cocoa Dip recipe. Culinary professionals call this the “Mise en Place,” which means “everything in its Place.”

Setting up your ingredients not only helps speed up the cooking process but also ensures you have all the necessary ingredients on hand to make the recipe.

Can I Make Adjustments to the Recipe?

We used heavy cream to make our hot chocolate dip, but if you’d rather not deal with making your whipped cream, you can use Cool Whip instead. It will definitely make the process easier, but you’ll also get all the preservatives and ingredients you can’t pronounce along with it.

If you’d like to reduce the sweetness, you can replace the hot chocolate powder with ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder. It will have a less sweet, deeper chocolate flavor.

Have fun with the flavor by adding cinnamon or a touch of nutmeg. To make it Mexican hot chocolate dip, add a little cayenne or ancho chili powder along with the cinnamon.

To make a mint chocolate dip, add peppermint extract to the mixture. In fact, you can use your favorite flavor of hot chocolate mix, such as classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and salted caramel.

Chef Tip

If you’re adding any spices to the hot chocolate dip, add them when you add the cocoa powder and vanilla extract. For best results, after the dip is done, cover it with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to combine.

Easy to make, our hot cocoa dip is fluffy, sweet, and chocolaty, all the things that will make this party dip a family favorite all year long!

How to Store

Store leftover dip in an airtight container in your refrigerator for 3-4 days. It can be stored frozen for up to two months.

Recipe FAQs

Why is my hot cocoa dip grainy?

That can happen if you don’t blend the mixture long enough for it to be smooth and creamy. If it’s a little thick and grainy, add a tablespoon or two of heavy cream until the desired consistency is reached.

What can I serve with the dip?

This chocolaty dip goes great with graham crackers, vanilla wafers, animal crackers, shortbread, or any of your favorite cookies. It also goes well with pound cake cubes, biscotti, churros, and fresh fruit.
