Being a true foodie I am always looking for new and interesting cookbooks, my wife understands this is part of my job, keeping informed on current trends and reading up on areas that I am not as proficient in. (Plus I live for Italian and French cookbooks!), One of my addictions used to be food magazines. Now I’m not talking about Gourmet and Bon Apetit, where every other page is an ad or a paid recipe.
The original dish used arugula as the salad base, there was none available when I shopped so I decided on Organic Spring Mix.

I am delighted to know that I am not the only one who is addicted to food cooking magazines…yes they included Bon Appetit and Gourmet but also, fine cooking and Fresh cooking. Loved them. I could spend so much time just scouring them. The Australian and New Zealand magazines that you spoke of intrigued me. Where can I take a look?

Hey Dennis, I'm a magazine thief sometimes. Well, I've been known to make off with food and health magazines that weren't exactly mine (smile)! My dentist and doctor don't seem to care though.
Your salad looks beautiful by the way. You know I don't think there is any better meal than a really fresh salad with one's favorite fixings. Yum!

I'm chuckling at your comments about the magazines! cute!
My husband asks me to just tear out the pages I like and put them in a file…I did that for awhile, however, the file got too big to file! 🙂 So…I found a great organizing system and they are categorized and in their own book-case. Hey, they are like a good friend that you would never discard!
Thanks for sharing this delicious recipe!
I hope you'll stop by for chocolate and "sweet cherry surprise"!

I agree, the quality of images and paper in a magazine (or book) is crucial. I rarely buy cookbooks or magazines anymore as well as the ideas and recipes abound on the internet. But if I do decide to buy then the images can make or break the deal for me.
Your shrimp dish looks fantastic and perfectly summery!

Gosh…I have a real weakness for food magazines and cookbooks too. I was always questioned by my hubby as to how many dishes I have cooked for him. I told him I'm mainly looking at the pictures for inspiration…haha! Your dish here looks very delicious. Love the big picture…beautiful!

It warms my soul to hear you speak so fondly of delicious magazine. My parents used to buy it for me from the local supermarket when I was just a kid. I'd always read from the back cover to the front. Pictures
first and then reading the articles! Unfortunately, I'm a recently married student now and can only afford a quick flip through at the check out! Love your work!
Kitchen Masochist says
Sorry Dennis, I did laugh. I think it's wonderfully brave of you to openly admit your foray into magazines targeted to women. But hey. ideas are to be found everywhere and if it takes "Woman And Home…" and Donna Hay for you to come with this beautiful salad of yours, then so be it! 🙂
Jean says
I can so relate to this post. I'm obsessed with buying cookbooks (Italian and French, too) and will also sit in a bookstore for hours looking through them.
Your salad is beautiful, as usual. Even though there are a few steps, you presented them very well here.
Thanks!

What a beautiful salad! I am allergic to shellfish but I can still appreciate the beauty of a well composed dish. You are not alone in you addiction to food magazines (and cookbooks). I am incurable! And…I never, NEVER part with them once they have found their way to my home. I go to estate sales in search of obscure foodie publications and have gotten some real finds. My most recent (hang on…sit down…take some deep breaths…) is a tome about 4" thick entitled, "The Professional French Pastry Chef". It is AMAZING and I paid TEN BUCKS for a book that has $125.00 printed on the inside dust jacket! My other prize cookbook was given to my by my ex's late mother, Katharina. It is written in German and I have to use the google translater to read it. The publication date is 1934. There are no photos but it has over 600 recipes. The best part is…between the pages are dried herbs and flowers, hand written recipes on scraps of paper, a ration card from WWII and a menu from the ship she sailed to America on. It is a treasure. LOL…we won't even discuss my 2 entire bookshelves of cooking mags!!

We just had shrimp tonight in an Asian salad, but I'm betting your recipe here would have been ten times better! This looks absolutely finger lickin' plate lickin' good.

Food and drink magazines are the best. I too get annoyed about the all the advertisements in most domestic magazine, and skipping over them is easy but still a drag. There is so much inspiration to be found in the pages every month. I ride a bus to and from work which makes for great reading time!
